The Dept of Plant Sciences is recruiting for a short term Jr. Specialist for a 6 month appointment starting in July.
Job Functions include:
75% RESEARCH -Responsibilities include making crosses for SCOPE projects, managing research fields as needed (mending or moving irrigation, monitoring for pests and diseases, weeding and weeding supervision with the help of Student Farm staff, Assistant Specialist, and others) -The Jr. Specialist will be collecting and evaluating fruits and other phenotypic trait data, harvesting seeds, quantifying yield. Will assist with lab work, basic statistical data analysis, presentation of data, and computer management of data files. -The candidate will contribute to the project by researching and selecting parents for crossing, and will help determine which breeding lines should be selected for further study. Will work with PI and Assistant Specialist to use this data collection and analysis for publications and cultivar releases. -The Jr Specialist will contribute to educational materials and extension-type publications related to the SCOPE project. Research results will be presented at field days and seed summits and other academic meetings as needed.
5% PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY -Contribute to writing reports and present results via outreach meetings, web, posters, and handouts, and field days. Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations. Participate and/or attend conferences appropriate to specific field.
20% UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE -Assist with the mentoring of SCOPE interns as needed, such as demonstrating or supervising crosses, field management methods, phenotyping, and other data collection -Participate in meetings between UC faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, staff, and Organic Seed Alliance staff to assist in the coordination various crop breeding efforts.
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Plant Sciences or related field. Term of appointment: 6 month position anticipated to start July 2019.
Note: The junior specialist rank is an entry level position, accordingly it is inappropriate to hire applicants with advanced degrees in this field, or those with bachelor's degrees and three years' relevant work experience. (See APM-UCD 330)
