Grounds Department is considered essential personnel and as such must be willing to work a flexible schedule including call-in work that could encompass various shifts, weekends, holidays, Institute emergencies, and times other than normal work schedules.
The Groundskeeper I position maintains and enhances the aesthetic beauty of the 1200 acre RIT campus landscape and hardscape with minimal supervision, and assists in the training and technique development of Groundskeeper II and student helpers. Primary duties involve the maintenance and repair of all exterior grounds features. Some duties are seasonal in nature and include mowing, snow clearing, pruning, and leaf removal. Additional duties include responding, assessing, and managing non-routine situations as presented by Public Safety and FMS leadership.
Detailed Job Description
Care for established lawns and athletic fields. This includes:
Mowing, mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, and trimming/edging around flower beds, walks, or walls.
Assist the Athletic Field Specialist in preparing all athletic fields for their use by RIT's collegiate, club, and intramural teams.
Safely and efficiently operate vehicles and powered equipment necessary for these activities.
Determine appropriate amounts of fertilizers and pesticides to be used.
Apply pesticides and fertilizers in accordance with the University's integrated pest management program and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (NYSDEC) regulations. Maintain pesticide application records per NYSDEC regulations.
Select and use appropriate PPE equipment for tasks performed and conditions encountered.
Winter snow removal and seasonal maintenance. This includes proper techniques for removing snow from roads, walkways, parking lots, and stairs, as well as coordinating and/or performing winter snow removal on artificial and natural turf fields using techniques to prevent damage to fields, surfaces, and their bases. Safely and efficiently operate vehicles and powered equipment necessary to perform these tasks.
Determine the appropriate shape and size of plants.
Properly plant, trim, and prune trees, shrubs, and flowers.
Analyze environmental conditions (weather trends, soil conditions, plant conditions) and determine courses of action to maintain plant health efficiently using available resources.
Assist in the training of Groundskeepers II of pruning and trimming techniques.
Provide proper upkeep of hard surface areas including, sidewalks, concrete pavers, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, or other outdoor structures and amenities.
Stewardship of the University property, equipment, and tools. This includes all department equipment and all University landscape and property contained therein (statues, shrubbery, waste containers, fences, benches, etc.)
Remove litter from grounds. This includes:
Emptying trash containers.
Sweeping doorways, steps, and fire exits.
Removing signage, posters, and graffiti from campus buildings and grounds.
Removing and properly disposing of dead animals, wash away blood, other body fluids, and other situations as directed by FMS or Public Safety.
Work with Horticulturalist to determine irrigation rates and times to operate irrigation systems for proper plant health and efficient use of water. Install and maintain irrigation systems as needed.
Provide support for special events throughout campus. Deliver signage, grills, and barricades.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED plus five years of experience in all seasons outdoors grounds keeping in a university campus setting or equivalent type of facility with expansive grounds facilities and landscape.
Must have either NYSDEC Commercial Pesticide Applicator License OR Class B with Air Brake endorsement.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Computer skills in using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and, Excel), computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), Project Tracker, and Oracle applications.
Must work in a thorough and safe manner for self and be aware of the safety of others in group projects (tree trimming and removal).
Ability and willingness to provide contact information to be used for a call-in phone listing.
Must be able to tolerate prolonged exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, unpleasant odors and loud noises.
Must be self-motivated, willing to perform manual labor, able to withstand irregular and long hours during winter weather conditions.
Ability to perform physical activities such as standing or walking for long periods, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, crawling, and climbing ladders or scaffolding.
Able to lift 50 pounds.
Ability to effectively listen, speak, write, and interact in a tactful and logical manner. Continually reinforce FMS' commitment to conduct at all times that is courteous, friendly, helpful and cooperative to students, staff, co-workers, and visitors.
