Essential Job Duties:
The Horticulture Extension Agent is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating non-formal educational programs related to Consumer and Commercial Horticulture in Brunswick County. Program efforts will effectively reach target audiences by being innovative and proactive to the needs of Extension clientele. Program areas include: commercial ornamental horticulture, landscape and turf management, home horticulture, including community gardens, pesticide safety and recertification, urban forestry, and the pesticide recycling program. The Horticulture Agent will also be responsible for leading and directing the mission of the Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program and managing 100+ EMGVs.
Additional responsibilities include recruiting and training Extension Master Gardener Volunteers and coordinating an active local Master Gardener program and Association. Teamwork with the Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator and Horticulture Technician is critical for the success of this program. A dynamic group of Master Gardener Volunteers take an active role in many aspects of the total Extension program through plant clinics, seminars, workshops, plant sales and the physical and financial support of the continued development of the Brunswick Botanical Garden located at the government complex in Bolivia. The agent will also work with 4-H staff to develop and coordinate youth horticultural programs.
One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in an agricultural or related field. The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor's degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.
The agent must be able to work independently, handle multiple demands, and have the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
The successful candidate must be able to network with diverse audiences, customers, volunteers, state level and local Extension staff and community partners.
The candidate must be a team player and support the total Extension program, possess strong oral and written communication skills, possess appropriate computer skills, and be willing to actively seek outside resources to enhance program efforts.
The candidate must be able to develop and implement innovative strategies for presenting educational programs and plan, implement, market and evaluate educational programs and activities with measurable impacts.
A Bachelor's degree in horticulture or closely related field is required; a master's degree is preferred.
Knowledge of turf, shrubs and trees adapted to the southeastern coastal region of North Carolina and typical pest and cultural problems is desirable.
